Champagne Pool – New Zealand’s Geothermal Wonder

Champagne Pool is actually derived from the abundant efflux of carbon dioxide, like that of a bubbling glass of champagne. Formed 900 years ago by a hydrothermal eruption, this natural hot spring is the most striking geothermal feature of New Zealand’s Waiotapu geothermal wonderland.

The orange ring at the outer side of the pool is created by bacteria that thrive on the upper edge of the geothermal pools. Visitors must be very careful when exploring the site because the water is saturated with toxic elements and metalloid compounds that are hazardous to humans.
