Visit This Lord of the Rings Filming Location in Queenstown

Muster the Rohirrim! New Zealand is filled with landscapes that brought Middle-earth to life, but few let you explore several recognisable filming spots while driving through a working farm.

Located near Queenstown, Deer Park Heights appeared in both The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Fans may recognise its rolling hills and dramatic cliffs from the warg attack sequence, where the people of Rohan flee towards Helm’s Deep while Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the Rohirrim battle the approaching riders.

Iconic moments filmed around the property include Legolas swinging himself onto a horse and Aragorn being dragged towards the edge of a cliff by a warg.

The 800-hectare property originally opened to visitors in 1966 before closing to the public for several years. It reopened in 2020 and continues to welcome a limited number of self-driving visitors while operating as a working deer farm.

What to expect

Although Deer Park Heights attracts plenty of Lord of the Rings fans, the experience is about more than locating scenes from the films. The elevated farm offers panoramic views over Lake Whakatipu, Queenstown, The Remarkables and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Here are a few things to know before visiting:

• Visitors must make an advance booking through the official Deer Park Heights website. Daily admission is limited to 80 vehicles.

• Entry currently costs NZ$75 per private vehicle, covering up to eight seats.

• You will need a personal or rental vehicle. Walkers, cyclists, taxis, ride-hailing vehicles, tour buses and commercial tour operators are not permitted.

• Both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles may enter, along with campervans and motorhomes that meet the seating restrictions.

• The experience follows a five-kilometre, single-lane loop road that is unsealed and steep in certain places.

• Visitors can stop at marked lookout points and explore selected walking trails along the way.

• Animals living around the farm include deer, goats, donkeys, miniature horses, pigs, llamas, alpacas and cattle.

• Bring a NZ$2 coin to purchase animal feed from one of the dispensers. Follow all signs and do not approach animals with hard antlers.

• Opening hours vary according to the season, from longer daylight hours in spring and summer to earlier closing times in autumn and winter.

Bookings open up to 30 days before the selected date. You will also need to provide your vehicle registration number, which is recognised by the camera at the entrance gate.

Lord of the Rings filming locations

Deer Park Heights contains seven marked Lord of the Rings filming locations. Their numbers do not necessarily reflect the order in which you will encounter them while driving through the property.

LoTR 1: Riding to Minas Tirith (Return of the King) – Witness the beautiful mountain range which was seen when Gandalf and Pippin were riding to Minas Tirith on the back of magnificent Shadowfax.

LoTR 2: Refugee camp (Two Towers) – This is the terrain which the Rohan refugees travelled coming from Edoras to Helms Deep. It’s also where Gimli falls off his horse.

LoTR 3: Rider of Rohan (Two Towers) – This is the cliff where the warg rider ambushes Hama.

LoTR 4: Legolas kills the warg (Two Towers) – On this hill, Legolas comes to the rescue and warns the rest of Theoden’s people of the incoming danger.

LoTR 5: Legolas spots more wargs (Two Towers) – With his sharp elvish eyes, Legolas stands on this elevated slope, spots the army of warg riders, and does an amazing flip while getting on his horse.

LoTR 6: Warg attack and Aragorn’s cliff (Two Towers) – This field with a cliff edge was where Aragorn was dragged as his wrist was caught on a warg saddle, and he eventually falls off the cliff with the warg.

LoTR 7: Paths of the Dead (Return of the King) – This rocky downward slope is where they filmed the exit of the Paths of the Deads and where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli spot the corsair ships (this scene is in the extended cut/DVD, in case it sounds unfamiliar).

Deer Park Heights may appear to be a simple animal farm at first, but its immense landscapes, mountain views and cinematic history make it one of Queenstown’s most memorable self-drive experiences.

Even travellers who cannot recall every scene from the trilogy can enjoy stopping at peaceful viewpoints, meeting the farm animals and exploring a side of Queenstown that feels far removed from its busy town centre. For Tolkien fans, however, driving through the hills of Rohan is an experience worthy of its own place on the New Zealand itinerary.
