Universal Studios Japan can get incredibly busy, especially during holiday periods or special events like Halloween and Christmas. To avoid disappointment, pre-book your tickets at least two months in advance if you’re travelling during peak season, or a few weeks ahead for off-peak times.

If you want to skip long queues for major attractions, consider buying an Express Pass in advance. These often sell out quickly, but can save you hours once inside the park.

The best days to visit are Wednesdays and Thursdays. Weekends tend to draw large local crowds, and weekdays often see school excursions. Visiting midweek gives you the best chance of enjoying shorter lines and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Getting there and when to arrive

The easiest way to reach USJ is by train. The park is directly connected via the JR Yumesaki Line to Universal City Station, which drops you right at the doorstep of the park. If you’re travelling from a metro line, you’ll need to transfer to the JR line, Yumesaki Line, before heading to Universal City.

To make the most of your day, aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before opening. Queues form early, and entering as soon as the gates open lets you head straight to popular rides such as Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge or The Flying Dinosaur before lines build up.

What to bring

Osaka’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s best to bring water and a portable fan if you’re visiting during the hotter months. Comfortable shoes are a must, as you’ll be on your feet all day.

Be aware of USJ’s park policies, as certain items are not permitted inside. These include oversized luggage, dangerous objects such as blades, tools, helmets, or weapons, as well as alcoholic drinks. Guests are also not allowed to bring outside food and beverages in containers like coffee cups, glass bottles, or cans. Additionally, monopods, tripods, selfie sticks, drones, transceivers, and other radio-controlled devices are strictly prohibited.

It’s also worth noting that only Annual Pass holders can re-enter the park once they’ve exited. All other ticket types are single-entry only.

Tips for a great day out

Arrive early and prioritise high-demand attractions first to make the most of your day. This way, you can enjoy the most popular rides before the crowds build up.

Download the official USJ app to check wait times, show schedules, and map out your route. It’s an invaluable tool for planning your day efficiently and avoiding long queues.

Stay hydrated and take short breaks throughout your visit. There’s plenty of shaded seating around the park to rest your feet and recharge.

Plan your meals strategically, as lunch spots tend to get very busy between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Eating slightly earlier or later can save you time and stress.

If you’re a big fan of Super Nintendo World or The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, make sure to arrive with an area entry ticket or timed entry slot. These popular zones can reach capacity quickly, and this ensures you won’t miss out on the full experience.
