If you're looking for a more relaxing vacation where you can truly bond with your loved ones while surrounded by breathtaking scenery, here are our favourite family-friendly activities in Sabah.
1. Discover Sabah's Fascinating Culture at Mari Mari Cultural Village
Located in Kionsom, Inanam, just 30 minutes from Kota Kinabalu, Mari Mari Cultural Village is a living museum that brings Sabah's rich cultural heritage to life.
Instead of simply reading about Sabah's history, you and your family can experience it firsthand. The village showcases the traditional homes, clothing, customs, and survival skills of Sabah's five major indigenous ethnic groups.
But the experience goes far beyond sightseeing.
One of our favourite parts was tasting authentic local snacks prepared by the indigenous communities. Trust us, your mouth will be busy the entire tour! You'll get to try unique traditional delicacies you've probably never tasted before, making this one of the most memorable experiences for the whole family.
As you walk through the village, you'll also enjoy the refreshing atmosphere surrounded by lush rainforest. The sound of flowing streams, traditional cooking demonstrations, and fascinating survival techniques make you feel like you've stepped back in time.
Don't miss the cultural performances either. The traditional dances are incredibly entertaining, and the performers are some of the warmest and friendliest people you'll meet in Sabah.
2. Admire Incredible Local Art at Sabah Art Gallery
Even before stepping inside Sabah Art Gallery, the building itself will leave you amazed.
Its futuristic architecture resembles a giant octagonal basket, with four floors tilting outward at a dramatic 30-degree angle, making it one of Malaysia's most recognisable buildings.
Once inside, prepare to be even more impressed.
The first thing that caught our attention was a breathtaking suspended artwork hanging from the ceiling. It immediately sets the tone for a gallery filled with creativity and innovation. Many of the installations aren't just beautiful; they're also environmentally friendly.
The gallery features works created by both local and international artists, ranging from classical paintings and sculptures to modern installations inspired by the spirit of Borneo. Whether you're an art lover or simply curious about Sabah's culture, there's something here that will capture your attention.
One artwork that truly stayed with us tells the story of Huminodun, one of Sabah's most beloved legends. The painting portrays the beautiful young woman who sacrificed herself to save her people, becoming a symbol of selflessness and hope. Learning the inspiring story behind the artwork made us appreciate Sabah's culture even more.
This is the perfect place to introduce your children to art while learning about Sabah's fascinating heritage.
3. Go Street Art Hunting Around Kota Kinabalu
If your family enjoys photography and colourful murals, you'll love exploring the streets of Kota Kinabalu.
Scattered throughout the city are beautiful pieces of street art that make every walk feel like an outdoor art gallery. It's a fun activity that lets you discover hidden corners of the city while snapping memorable family photos.
Our favourite mural can be found on the unique Wisma Inti Utama building near Atkinson Clock Tower.
The four-story building has a striking triangular shape, often compared to a smaller version of New York's Flatiron Building. Covering one side of the building is a massive mural that stretches all the way to the top, creating one of the city's most Instagram-worthy photo spots.
Another must-visit location is Pillars of Sabah, located directly across from Suria Sabah Mall on Jalan Haji Saman.
This site was once the British colonial Land and Survey Department office. Although the building survived World War II, it was destroyed by a fire in 1992, leaving behind 30 concrete pillars. Today, the remaining pillars have been transformed into an open-air street art project showcasing works by talented local Sabah artists, making it another fantastic stop for family photos.
4. Slow Down with a Cosy Café Hopping Experience

After spending the day exploring the city, nothing feels better than relaxing over coffee and delicious pastries.
Kota Kinabalu has an impressive café scene, making café hopping a wonderful family activity.
One of the city's most popular cafés is Woo! Cafe. Its sleek exterior and bold signage immediately caught our attention. Inside, the bright natural lighting, clean minimalist interior, and creative decorations create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Head upstairs and you'll discover a large bookshelf filled with books that you can enjoy while sipping your favourite coffee.
During our walk around Kota Kinabalu, we also stumbled upon a hidden coffee shop tucked away on the second floor of an unassuming building called The Beans Express Cafe. From the outside, it didn't look particularly exciting. But once we walked upstairs, we instantly fell in love with the cosy atmosphere.
The soft sofas were incredibly comfortable, making it the perfect place to relax after a long day.
Instead of coffee, we ordered their matcha and cinnamon chocolate drinks, paired with buttery croissants and fresh sandwiches. It turned out to be the perfect afternoon treat while spending quality time together.
5. Watch One of the World's Most Beautiful Sunsets at Tanjung Aru Beach
As evening approaches, make your way to Tanjung Aru Beach, famous for having one of the world's most spectacular sunsets.
The best time to arrive is around 30 minutes before sunset (approximately 5:30–6:00 PM local time), when the sky begins transforming into stunning shades of orange, pink, and purple.
The beach features soft sand that's perfect for sitting down with your family, enjoying the golden hour while sipping a refreshing young coconut.
Want to make the experience even more unforgettable?
Rent a stand-up paddle (SUP) board or Kayak and paddle into the calm sea as the sun sets behind you. Not only is it an incredibly fun activity, but you'll also capture some of the most beautiful sunset photos of your entire trip.
6. Head to Kundasang for Cool Mountain Air and Sunrise Views
Sabah isn't only famous for its beautiful beaches.
Just around two hours from Kota Kinabalu, you'll find Kundasang, a charming highland town surrounded by cool mountain air and breathtaking scenery.
If Tanjung Aru is the place for sunsets, Kundasang is where you'll witness one of the most beautiful sunrises in Sabah.
The most popular sunrise viewpoint is Sosodikon Hill, sitting at an elevation of 1,465 meters above sea level.
We left Kota Kinabalu at around 3:00 AM, arrived by 5:00 AM, and immediately started hiking to catch the sunrise.
Don't worry—the trail is very family-friendly. You'll only need to climb a few flights of stairs before reaching the summit, where you'll be rewarded with an unforgettable sunrise behind the majestic Mount Kinabalu.
Watching the first rays of sunlight illuminate Southeast Asia's highest mountain is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
TripZillatip: Bring a warm jacket, especially for young children. The morning wind can be surprisingly cold and strong.
After soaking in the incredible views, reward yourself with breakfast at Restoran D'Lengkuas, Mesilau.
The buffet dishes may cool down quickly because they're self-served, but honestly, the incredible panoramic view more than makes up for it. We highly recommend choosing a table closest to the garden so nothing blocks your view of Mount Kinabalu while you enjoy breakfast.
7. Meet Adorable Cows at Desa Dairy Farm
No family trip to Kundasang is complete without visiting Desa Dairy Farm.
Located at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, this 199-hectare dairy farm produces approximately 900,000 litres of fresh milk each year from its Holstein Friesian cows.
Often called "Little New Zealand," the farm is famous for its cool climate, rolling green hills, and high-quality dairy products, including fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese, and delicious gelato.
One of the highlights for children is interacting with the adorable cows and goats.
Kids can feed them fresh grass or even bottle-feed baby cows and goats, creating unforgettable hands-on experiences with friendly farm animals.
Before leaving, don't forget to try the farm's freshly made yoghurt, milk, and creamy gelato. Produced right on-site, they're some of the most popular treats among visitors.
8. Stay Longer in Nature at Hounon Ridge Farmstay & Camping
If you're not ready to leave Kundasang, consider spending the night at Hounon Ridge Farmstay & Camping.
Although it's located around 30–40 minutes from the main attractions in Kundasang, the peaceful surroundings make the journey absolutely worthwhile.
Here you'll wake up to breathtaking views of majestic Mount Kinabalu, peaceful lotus ponds, colourful flower gardens, and wide-open landscapes stretching across the Kundasang valley.
The spacious property offers plenty of room for families to relax, unwind, and simply enjoy the cool mountain atmosphere.
If you're looking for a quiet escape surrounded by nature, this is the perfect place to slow down and recharge with your loved ones.
