The Philippines

Winner of Sustainability Leader
of the Year

The Philippines' greatest tourism treasures are inseparable from the people and environments that sustain them. From coastal communities to indigenous cultural traditions, the country's approach to responsible tourism increasingly recognises that meaningful travel should create opportunities for local people while helping safeguard natural and cultural heritage. Through initiatives championed by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, this vision is taking shape in practical and community-centred ways.

A key example is TPB's Community-Based Tourism Marketing Enhancement Programme, which helps local tourism stakeholders develop their offerings and reach wider audiences. Its initiatives have highlighted traditional weaving communities, including the Tagolwanen Women Weavers' Association in Bukidnon, connecting cultural preservation with opportunities for local livelihoods. Environmental responsibility is another priority, reflected in activities such as community clean-ups, tree planting and efforts to reduce single-use plastics during tourism programmes. These actions complement wider efforts to encourage visitors to appreciate destinations beyond their scenery and recognise the communities behind each experience.

By placing local participation and responsible practices within its tourism promotion efforts, the Philippines demonstrates how destination marketing can contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable travel industry. Its progress offers an encouraging vision of tourism that values not only the journeys travellers take, but also the places and people they leave behind.
