Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street

Starting your day with amazing food is always a good idea and one of the most famous dishes that hails from this province is their beloved dakgalbi, or fiery chicken! This dish is so popular that there is not only one, but three entire streets dedicated to restaurants specialising in the dish in the city of Chuncheon, Gangwon.

The most famous of the three is Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street located in Chuncheon’s downtown Myeong-dong.

Due to the generous amount of food for its low price, dakgalbi is initially popular amongst soldiers and college students. Now, it is a popular restaurant menu item that is nostalgic for the locals – making it one of the most representative dishes in Chuncheon.

Chuncheon Foreign Tourist Taxi Experience

After filling your stomach with a glorious meal, burn your energy by checking out the many attractions in the area. You can do so with the help of the Foreign Tourist Taxi Experience, which will surely make your exploration of the area so much easier and accessible. Together with Chuncheon and Gangneung City, Gangwon province has hired 200 taxi drivers dedicated to assist foreign tourists. gangwon korea itinerary

For only 20,000â‚© (S$23.46), you are able to employ these drivers to bring you around as many attractions in Chuncheon for three hours! This Tourist Taxi service can be found at the Tourist Information Center by Chuncheon Station Exit 1, where passengers can decide whether to take a basic tour course of the major attractions or other attractions of their choice.

Personally, having made use of this service, I find it extremely useful and an absolute value for money. You are able to visit all the attractions you wish to see without needing to worry about getting from Point A to Point B! Best of all, like all taxis, it is comfortable and transports up to four passengers.

Soyanggang Skywalk

Cheongpyeongsa Temple

Located on the beautiful awe-inspiring slopes of Obongsan Mountain and just a mere 10 minutes ferry ride from Soyang Lake Ferry Dock, you can find the old Cheongpyeongsa Temple.

The climb up might be a little intimidating as the slopes get more steep as you go on, however, the clear sound of water down the stream will surely refresh you! There is also a cafe along the path to the temple, where you can take a breather and enjoy the surroundings.

Yuklim Street and Nangman Market

End your day in one of the largest commercial areas in the past, which is now known as Yuklim Street. There is a Makgolli Village, a spot many young travellers enjoy due to the old and chic atmosphere of the space.

The forest remained private until 2010, when it became popular by word of mouth. Now, the gracious owner has opened up his private land for free when the whole forest is colored in a beautiful golden hue – only in October!

Gangneung Ojuk Hanok Village

Consider staying at Gangneung Ojuk Hanok Village, which offers and authentic cultural stay in a traditional Korean house. While it has been renovated for the convenience and safety of guests, the traditional Korean style and sentiment still remains.

Anmok Coffee Street

In the 90s, vending machines were an abundance along the beach, and after the first Gangneung Coffee Festival was held, a few cafes stared to pop up until it became the Anmok Coffee Street we know today.

Not only are there many instagrammable cafes, there are also artworks scattered all over the beach! Enjoy a cup of coffee while admiring the works and the ocean breeze – the perfect start for the day.

Ojukheon House

Stop by Ojukheon House, a culturally important relic where Shin Saimdang and her son Yi I,a scholar and politician of the Joseon Period, lived.

Built during the early Joseon Dynasty, this remains to be one of the oldest wooden residential buildings in Korea. There is also the household shrine, Munseongsa, where many people go to pay their respects to their important scholar and his mother.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to don the traditional garment for the royal family and it was an experience!

Sea Train to the East Sea

Take a ride down to Jeongdongjin and the East Sea by hopping onto the Sea Train service! The ride takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes for a one-way trip.

The train windows are tall and wide, ensuring you get splendid ocean views. Inside the train, the walls were decorated with underwater motifs and images of sea animals – exciting for children on board.

The ride is extremely enjoyable too, as the train puts on motion-sensor games and music for all to enjoy. There is also a live DJ who interacts with the riders through the monitors available in all cabins.

Nongoldamgil

This mural village by the sea is a treat for the eyes! As you climb up the steps enjoying the art, you will also find impressive views of the sea from the top. The art is also representative of life in Mukho, a visual representation of history.

After enjoying the village, head on down to the Jeongdongjin Rail Bike to enjoy the vast East Sea up close. Best of all, the rail bike is motor-operated, which means that you can simply sit and enjoy the ride.

The rail bike starts from either Jeongdongjin Station or Hourglass Park Station and goes along the coast, where you can feel the ocean breeze while relaxing!

Goseong Unification Observatory

From 1945 to 1953 this area was a part of North Korea. Now, this building is the closest South Koreans can get to seeing a part of that detached world. On the viewing deck, there are binoculars that you can use to get a closer look.

Inside the observatory, there is a large detailed map of the mountains in the area and the locations of the military installations. One of the most memorable takeaway was learning that there is a train rail connecting the two Koreas – hoping we can use it one day when reunification is possible!

Inje Birch Forest

With over 700,000 birch trees planted across 138-hectare landscape, Inje Birch Forest offers impressive scenic hiking courses, which you can join and enjoy the tranquility. The tall white bark birch trees are magnificent scattered all around!
