Where the Disney story began

If you want to experience the park where it all started, Disneyland Resort in California should be at the top of your list.

Disneyland Park opened on 17 July 1955 and remains the only Disney theme park that Walt Disney personally opened. Much of its nostalgic appeal is still intact, from the intimate scale of Main Street, U.S.A. to classic attractions that have entertained generations of visitors. At the same time, newer areas such as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge prove that the original Disneyland is not stuck in the past.

The resort has two theme parks: Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. Their entrances face each other across the Main Entrance Esplanade, so walking from one park to the other takes only around five minutes. This makes Disneyland Resort one of the easiest Disney destinations for park hopping.

The rides you should not miss

The resort’s most ambitious attraction is Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland Park, a large-scale experience that combines walk-through scenes, trackless vehicles, simulator sections and a dramatic drop, with a minimum height requirement of 102cm. At Disney California Adventure, Radiator Springs Racers offers a detailed tour of Radiator Springs before ending in a side-by-side race, though it is a slot-car dark ride rather than a roller coaster. Other key attractions include Indiana Jones Adventure, a motion-based temple adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission BREAKOUT!, a drop-tower ride with changing music and sequences, Incredicoaster, a launched roller coaster with an inversion, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a musical log-flume ride inspired by The Princess and the Frog.

Where to eat at Disneyland Resort

You could easily spend a full day snacking your way around the resort, with quick options like Bengal Barbecue for skewers, Jolly Holiday Bakery Café for sandwiches and pastries, Cozy Cone Motel for fun cone-shaped snacks, and Plaza Inn for its popular fried chicken meals. For a more relaxed sit-down experience, Blue Bayou offers dining inside Pirates of the Caribbean, Carthay Circle serves refined Californian dishes, Lamplight Lounge features Pixar-themed décor and waterfront views, and Napa Rose at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel is the most upscale option. Character dining is also available at Minnie & Friends Breakfast at Plaza Inn, Mickey’s Tales of Adventure at Storytellers Café, and Goofy’s Kitchen at Disneyland Hotel, with table-service reservations typically opening 60 days in advance and filling quickly.

Tickets, park reservations and Lightning Lane

Adult one-day, one-park tickets cost between US$104 and US$224, or approximately SGD 140 to SGD 300, depending on the ticket tier and date, with the lowest prices available only on selected off-peak days. A ticket alone does not guarantee entry, as visitors must also secure a theme park reservation for their chosen starting park. Park Hopper tickets allow guests to enter their reserved park first before moving between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, with no fixed waiting time but access still subject to capacity. Lightning Lane Multi Pass starts from US$34 per person per day, with prices varying by date, while high-demand attractions such as Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers require separate Lightning Lane Single Pass purchases unless included in the more expensive Premier Pass.

When is the best time to visit?

For lighter crowds, try visiting on weekdays from late January to early February or in early November before the Thanksgiving period.

Halloween Time runs from 21 August to 31 October 2026, filling both parks with seasonal decorations, entertainment and limited-edition food. It is an exciting time to visit, but certainly not a quiet one. Disney California Adventure may also close early on selected nights for Oogie Boogie Bash, a separately ticketed Halloween event.

The biggest Disney holiday you can plan

Walt Disney World is not simply a theme park. It is an enormous holiday destination covering approximately 25,000 acres, complete with four theme parks, two water parks, Disney Springs and more than 25 official Disney Resort hotels.

The four theme parks are Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Each is large enough to fill an entire day, which is why a Walt Disney World trip requires far more time and planning than a visit to most other Disney resorts. Official Disney hotel list

The best rides at each park

Magic Kingdom is the park most similar to the original Disneyland, with Cinderella Castle at its centre. Its key attractions include TRON Lightcycle / Run, a high-speed coaster in a motorbike-style seat, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a musical log-flume ride, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a family-friendly roller coaster, and the classic Haunted Mansion dark ride.

EPCOT combines theme park rides with global pavilions, seasonal festivals, and ideas about science and innovation. The standout attraction is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a reverse-launch coaster with rotating ride vehicles. Other popular rides include Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, and Soarin’ Around the World.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the main destination for Star Wars fans, featuring Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance as its most ambitious attraction. It also offers The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Slinky Dog Dash, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom focuses on nature, wildlife, and immersive storytelling. Highlights include Avatar Flight of Passage, a 3D flying simulator over Pandora, Expedition Everest, a high-speed mountain coaster, Kilimanjaro Safaris, which takes guests through live animal habitats, and Na’vi River Journey, a calm boat ride through a glowing rainforest.

Where to eat at Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World offers hundreds of dining options, from quick-service meals to fine dining. For casual food, Satu’li Canteen at Animal Kingdom serves customisable bowls, Flame Tree Barbecue is known for smoked meats, Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie at EPCOT offers French pastries, and Regal Eagle Smokehouse serves American barbecue. Popular table-service restaurants include Be Our Guest Restaurant, Space 220, Le Cellier Steakhouse, Tiffins, and The Hollywood Brown Derby.

For a special experience, Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is a Michelin-starred restaurant and has held AAA Five Diamond status since 2000. Families can also enjoy character meals at Cinderella’s Royal Table, Chef Mickey’s, Topolino’s Terrace, Tusker House, and Garden Grill. Most dining reservations open 60 days in advance, and Disney hotel guests can book for their entire stay once their booking window opens.

Tickets and queue planning

A one-day, one-park ticket for guests aged 10 and above costs approximately US$119 to US$209, or around SGD160 to SGD280, depending on the date and selected park, with Magic Kingdom generally being the most expensive and Animal Kingdom usually the cheapest, and Florida tax added at checkout. Most date-based tickets do not require an additional theme park reservation, although some annual passes and non-date-based tickets may still require one, so it is important to check the conditions of your ticket. Lightning Lane passes can be purchased up to seven days in advance for eligible Disney hotel guests, while other visitors can usually buy them three days before their visit.

When is the best time to visit?

Late January to early February is usually cooler and less crowded outside holiday weekends, while late April to early May and early November can also be good times to visit if you avoid major holidays like Easter and Thanksgiving. September often has cheaper prices but is still hot, humid, and within hurricane season, and October is popular for Halloween events, with Magic Kingdom sometimes closing early for special ticketed parties.

3. Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, Japan

The Disney resort that gets every little detail right

Tokyo Disney Resort has developed an almost legendary reputation among Disney fans. It is known for exceptional cast-member service, beautifully designed seasonal entertainment, imaginative merchandise, changing popcorn flavours and an extraordinary level of attention to detail.

The resort consists of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. While Tokyo Disneyland offers a refined version of the traditional castle-park experience, Tokyo DisneySea is built around maritime exploration and is frequently praised as one of the most thoughtfully designed theme parks in the world.

The best rides at Tokyo Disneyland

Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast is one of the park’s most impressive attractions, using large ride vehicles, music and detailed sets to retell the animated film, and other priorities include The Happy Ride with Baymax, Pooh’s Hunny Hunt, Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek!, and Splash Mountain, which remains in its original form in Tokyo.

The best rides at Tokyo DisneySea

The park’s signature attraction is Journey to the Center of the Earth, which takes riders deep inside Mount Prometheus before building to a dramatic finale. Other major attractions include Tower of Terror, which features a Tokyo-specific storyline, Soaring: Fantastic Flight, and several rides in Fantasy Springs—Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey, Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure, Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival, and Fairy Tinker Bell’s Busy Buggies—Tokyo DisneySea’s newest themed port.

What to eat at Tokyo Disney Resort

Tokyo Disney Resort’s food is part of the experience, with plenty of quick and casual options across both parks. For fast meals, popular choices include Hungry Bear Restaurant for Japanese curry, Vulcania Restaurant for Chinese dishes inside Mount Prometheus, and Pan Galactic Pizza Port for space-themed fast food. Other easy favourites are Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall and The Snuggly Duckling in Fantasy Springs.

For a more relaxed sit-down meal, guests often book restaurants such as Magellan’s, located beneath Mount Prometheus, the S.S. Columbia Dining Room, Blue Bayou Restaurant, and Ristorante di Canaletto.

The main character dining experience is Chef Mickey at the Disney Ambassador Hotel. Restaurant Priority Seating usually opens at 10am Japan time, one month before your visit date.

Popcorn is also a big Tokyo Disney tradition, with carts throughout both parks offering rotating flavours like garlic shrimp, curry, soy sauce and butter, caramel, and milk tea. Flavours and locations change often, so it’s best to check the official app on the day of your visit.

Tickets and how the queue system works

A standard 1-Day Passport for guests aged 18 and above costs between ¥8,900 and ¥12,400 (about SGD223 to SGD310) depending on the date, with peak Halloween weekends in October at the higher end. This ticket allows entry to either Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea, but not both, although a limited 1-Day Park Hopper Passport is available from 2 July to 14 September 2026 with hopping allowed from 11am. After entering the park, guests should use the Tokyo Disney Resort app to manage Disney Premier Access, 40th Anniversary Priority Pass selections, show entry requests, and mobile food orders, as availability can run out quickly.

When is the best time to visit?

Weekdays in mid-May after Japan’s Golden Week are a good time to visit, with pleasant spring weather and lighter crowds, while late November to early December is also comfortable and January to February is quieter if you don’t mind the cold. Cherry blossom season in late March to early April can be busy and the Disney parks are not ideal for sakura viewing. October has nice autumn weather but is very crowded due to Disney Halloween and higher ticket prices on weekends. It is best to avoid Golden Week in early May and the Obon holiday period in mid-August.

4. Disneyland Paris in France

European fairytales meet Disney storytelling

Disneyland Paris feels noticeably different from its American and Asian counterparts. The resort combines familiar Disney stories with European architecture, richer landscaping and a moodier interpretation of several classic attractions.

Its centrepiece, Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant, is far more than a photo backdrop. Visitors can explore its stained-glass interiors, walk through an upstairs gallery and descend into La Tanière du Dragon, where a large animatronic dragon waits beneath the castle.

Disneyland Paris has two theme parks: Disneyland Park and Disney Adventure World.

The second park officially changed its name from Walt Disney Studios Park to Disney Adventure World on 29 March 2026. The transformation arrived alongside the opening of World of Frozen, Adventure Way and the new Adventure Bay lake. Disneyland Paris announcement

The best rides at Disneyland Park

Big Thunder Mountain is one of the park’s main highlights, located on an island in the Rivers of the Far West and reached via underwater tunnels, and it is widely regarded as one of the most exciting versions of the ride. Other must-try attractions in the park include Phantom Manor, Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril.

The best rides at Disney Adventure World

World of Frozen recreates Arendelle and features Frozen Ever After as its main attraction; unlike Hong Kong’s version, it currently has only one major ride. In the rest of Disney Adventure World, key attractions include Raiponce Tangled Spin on Adventure Way, Crush’s Coaster, Ratatouille: The Adventure, Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure, and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Where to eat at Disneyland Paris

Quick-service dining includes Nordic Crowns Tavern in World of Frozen, along with Cowboy Cookout Barbecue, Stark Factory, and Market House Deli. Table-service options include Bistrot Chez Rémy, where the oversized setting makes guests feel miniature, Captain Jack’s Restaurant des Pirates inside Pirates of the Caribbean, Walt’s, an American Restaurant, Auberge de Cendrillon, and The Regal View Restaurant & Lounge, a princess character-dining venue overlooking Adventure Bay. Restaurant reservations generally open up to two months in advance, with Disney hotel guests often able to book earlier once their stay is confirmed.

Tickets and Disney Premier Access

Online prices vary depending on demand, with a dated one-day, one-park ticket starting from about €56 (around SGD 82), while the standard gate price is €129 for adults. Tickets may not be available at the entrance on busy or sold-out days, so advance purchase is strongly recommended. Disney Premier Access One offers fast access to a single attraction, while Premier Access Ultimate provides one-time fast access to each participating attraction, with prices varying by date.

When is the best time to visit?

January to March can offer shorter queues and lower ticket prices, but this comes with colder weather, reduced operating hours, and a higher chance of ride refurbishments, while September weekdays generally provide a better balance of weather and crowd levels, although Disney Adventure World may now be busier than older crowd forecasts suggest due to the opening of World of Frozen.

5. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort

A compact resort with exclusive Disney experiences

Hong Kong Disneyland may be smaller than the American, Japanese and European resorts, but that is part of its appeal. Its compact layout makes it easy to navigate, while the surrounding mountains create one of the most picturesque backdrops of any Disney park.

It is home to the world’s first and largest Frozen-themed land, as well as several attractions that cannot be found at any other Disney resort.

The Castle of Magical Dreams was transformed from the park’s original Sleeping Beauty Castle. Rather than representing a single princess, its architecture draws inspiration from multiple Disney heroines. Hong Kong Disneyland

The rides and shows you should prioritise

Mystic Manor is Hong Kong Disneyland’s signature attraction, a trackless dark ride where an enchanted music box brings the manor’s collection to life and causes chaos after Lord Henry Mystic’s monkey, Albert, gets involved, offering a whimsical, non-scary alternative to the Haunted Mansion and remaining exclusive to Hong Kong. Other highlights include Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, Frozen Ever After, Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs in World of Frozen, Iron Man Experience, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle!, as well as the nighttime show Momentous and the Friendtastic! parade.

Where to eat at Hong Kong Disneyland

For quick meals, Hong Kong Disneyland offers several casual dining options across the park, including Golden Crocus Inn in World of Frozen, Clopin’s Festival of Foods, Wayfinders’ Table, Starliner Diner, and Comet Café. These are ideal for fast, simple meals between attractions.

For a sit-down experience, table-service restaurants include Explorer’s Club Restaurant, Plaza Inn, Main Street Corner Café, and Crystal Lotus. Crystal Lotus is located at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel rather than inside the park. It is especially well known for its Disney character-shaped dim sum, which is served during lunch and must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance.

Character dining is also available at Enchanted Garden Restaurant, Dragon Wind, and selected seasonal experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Hotel.

Muslim travellers can find halal and halal-friendly options at several locations, including Wayfinders’ Table, Karibuni Grill, River View Café, and some hotel restaurants. Since menus and certification can change, it is best to confirm the latest details when booking.

Tickets, reservations and Premier Access

Adult one-day admission at Hong Kong Disneyland is priced using a four-tier system ranging from HK$669 to HK$939, which is approximately SGD 115 to SGD 160 depending on the visit date. A separate park reservation is required and can usually be made up to 90 days in advance. Disney Premier Access is also available for faster entry to selected rides, with bundle packages starting from HK$199 and individual attraction access from about HK$79, though prices and included rides may change.

When is the best time to visit?

November and early December are usually the best time to visit because the weather is cooler and less humid, while late October can also be comfortable if you avoid the busy National Day holiday in early October. January and February are cooler but can be crowded due to Lunar New Year celebrations. From July to September, expect hot, humid, and rainy conditions, with a chance of typhoons that may disrupt transport and park operations.

6. Shanghai Disney Resort in China

Image credit: Shanghai Disneyland | Official Website

Disney storytelling with a distinctly Chinese identity

Shanghai Disneyland was designed with the idea “Authentically Disney, Distinctly Chinese,” combining classic Disney storytelling with Chinese cultural influences and modern technology. It features the Enchanted Storybook Castle, the largest Disney castle in the world, and the world’s first Zootopia-themed land. The resort includes one theme park, two Disney hotels, Disneytown, and Wishing Star Park.

The best rides at Shanghai Disneyland

Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure is a standout attraction that reimagines the classic ride using physical sets, large-scale projections, screen effects, and rotating ride vehicles for a completely new experience. Zootopia: Hot Pursuit is another must-do, offering a trackless ride through different districts of Zootopia in a high-speed chase. Other key attractions to prioritise include TRON Lightcycle Power Run, Soaring Over the Horizon, Roaring Rapids, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Voyage to the Crystal Grotto.

Where to eat at Shanghai Disney Resort

For casual dining, guests can choose from Wandering Moon Restaurant for Chinese cuisine, along with Tangled Tree Tavern, Tribal Table, Jumbeaux’s Café in Zootopia, and Stargazer Grill. Table-service and character dining options include Royal Banquet Hall inside Enchanted Storybook Castle, Aurora at Shanghai Disneyland Hotel, Lumière’s Kitchen buffet with Disney character appearances, and Donald’s Dine ’n Delights in Disneytown, with Royal Banquet Hall and Lumière’s Kitchen officially recognised as character-dining venues.

Tickets and identity requirements

Adult one-day admission ranges from RMB475 to RMB799, or approximately SGD90 to SGD150, with Shanghai Disneyland using six pricing tiers based on expected crowd levels and a rolling calendar system. International visitors must enter correct passport details when purchasing tickets and bring the same original passport for entry, as tickets are linked to the registered identity and cannot be transferred or booked under another person’s details. Disney Premier Access can be purchased through the official Shanghai Disney Resort app or WeChat Mini Program for faster access to selected attractions.

When is the best time to visit?

Late March to April and late October to November are generally the most comfortable times to visit, with milder weather and seasonal scenery, while major Chinese public holidays such as Lunar New Year, Labour Day in early May, and National Day Golden Week in early October are best avoided due to large crowds.

Address: 310 Huangzhao Road, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China

What is happening in 2026: Shanghai Disney Resort’s year-long 10th birthday celebration began on 20 March 2026, bringing special entertainment, decorations, merchandise and food to the resort.

Which Disneyland should you visit first?

Image credit: Hong Kong Tourism Board | Official Website

There is no single “best” Disneyland because each resort does something differently.

Choose Disneyland Resort in California if you want to experience Disney history and move easily between two parks. Visit Walt Disney World if you want a full-scale resort holiday with several days of rides, dining and entertainment.

Pick Tokyo Disney Resort for exceptional theming, service and the one-of-a-kind Tokyo DisneySea. Head to Disneyland Paris for European atmosphere, a distinctive castle and the new World of Frozen.

For a shorter and more convenient Disney escape, Hong Kong Disneyland is the easiest to cover in one or two days. If cutting-edge attractions and exclusive lands matter most, Shanghai Disneyland delivers some of Disney’s most technologically ambitious rides.

Essential tips before visiting any Disney resort

No matter which castle you choose, a little preparation can save hours once you arrive. Before travelling, download the resort’s official app, create an account, and check ticket availability before booking non-refundable flights and hotels. Make sure you understand whether the resort requires both park admission and a separate reservation, and learn how its queue systems work in advance. Book popular restaurants as early as possible, and review park hours, refurbishment schedules, and any special ticketed events for your dates. Bring a power bank since most planning is now done on mobile apps, and keep your ticket confirmations handy while also carrying your original passport for identity checks. Remember that rides with the same name can differ greatly between parks, and always leave some flexibility in your itinerary in case of weather changes, closures, or shifting showtimes.

Visiting every Disneyland in the world is a formidable travel goal, but that is precisely what makes it exciting. Each resort offers its own interpretation of Disney magic, from Walt’s original park in California to a Frozen kingdom in Hong Kong, a maritime world in Tokyo and a technologically dazzling Zootopia in Shanghai.
