Jetstar Suspension: All Services Stop Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

Jetstar Suspension: All Services Stop Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

A bleak outlook for the airline industry as it grapples with the covid-19 pandemic.

Budget airline Jetstar Asia announced on 17 March that it would suspend all services for a period of three weeks. The Jetstar suspension came into light as a result of the introduction of new government restrictions across multiple jurisdictions in recent days, according to the travel alert issued on its official website.

Customers with existing bookings for travel from 15 March to 30 April 2020 will be offered a full value refund in the form of a travel credit voucher. The credit voucher can be redeemed within six months of issue, and a fare difference, if any, will apply.

Following the Jetstar suspension, several airlines are temporarily suspending or drastically reducing their operations as the travel industry experiences a staggering decrease in the demand for travel. As the Covid-19 pandemic looms, the worry of contracting the virus combined with government restrictions on travel has adverse impacts on the travel industry – more severe than anything we have encountered before.

Jetstar’s parent company; Qantas, Australia’s largest domestic and international airline, said it would reduce international capacity by about 90 per cent, and domestic capacity by around 60 per cent starting from the end of March until “at least” the end of May this year.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is slashing its flight capacity by half as it prepares for a prolonged period of difficulty.
