If you have already mastered the art of whipping up a frothy and aesthetically-pleasing Dalgona coffee, it is time to level up. Try your hands at pancake cereal – the latest ‘quarantine treat’ taking the Internet by storm.

A scour on Instagram and TikTok itself will churn out countless results by savvy amateurs putting their own creative spin on this sweet delight. In fact, it has become a popular trending hashtag on the global video community platform garnering a whopping eleven million views at the time of writing, with many users sharing their got-to recipes.

This latest food sensation essentially transforms regular buttermilk pancakes into bite-sized breakfast cereal just as the name suggests. 

With ‘pancake cereal’, you may decide to just repeat it daily because you can finally relish the unrivalled parts of two breakfast, as one. If you are interested in sinking your teeth into fluffy bowls of fabulous pancake cereal, you can join in the fun. It is simple and only requires a few ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Put on your apron and let’s get to the nitty gritty!

What ingredients are needed to make the pancake cereal?

1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour

3 ½ teaspoons of baking powder

A pinch of salt  

1 tablespoon of granulated sugar

1 cup milk

1 egg, beaten

Assorted toppings such as maple syrup, honey or chocolate chips (optional)

How do you go about preparing it? 

1. In a large bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt and granulated sugar. Whisk them together.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, butter and egg until well-incorporated.

3. Make an indentation in the centre of the dry ingredients and pour the milk mixture in.

4. Mix until the batter is smooth and lump-free.

5. Pour the pancake batter into a squeeze bottle with a nozzle on top or a pastry bag. You can DIY with a Ziploc bag if you do not have either. Remember to snip off a tiny piece at the corner of the bag if you are using one.

6. Gently dot the batter onto a nonstick or greased pan. Make sure the pancake size is consistent and small – about the size of a 50-cent coin.

7. Once the pancake batter starts bubbling, flip them over and cook for additional time. 

8. Slip the spatula under the rim of the pancake and lift it slightly to see if the bottom is golden-brown. 

9. Repeat with remaining batter.

10. Serve the perfectly-prepared pancakes with ample maple syrup for the best pairing.
