Afghanistan

Since 10 May 2022, Afghanistan has lifted all entry requirements for foreign travellers. However, keep in mind that most governments advise against travelling to Afghanistan due to political unrest.

Bahrain 

Bahrain is now one of the countries without travel restrictions. Since 20 Feb 2022, travellers no longer need to provide proof of testing or vaccination to enter the country. Bring your masks, though, as masking is required in public areas.

Bhutan

Brunei Darussalam no longer has entry rules for travellers, as of 15 Sep 2022. The only requirement is a travel medical insurance with COVID-19 coverage. In the country, masks must be worn in enclosed spaces and on public transportation.

Travellers are now free to enter India regardless of vaccination status. As of 22 Nov 2022, all entry requirements have been scrapped, including testing, quarantining, and submission of health forms.

Algeria 

Algeria is one of the countries without travel restrictions for vaccinated or unvaccinated travellers. Quarantine has been scrapped, but masking may be required in some public spaces.

  • Marvel at some of the world’s most spectacular Roman sites like Timgad and Djemila
  • Roam the Sahara Desert and camp under starlit skies at the oasis city of Djanet
  • Go on a seaside getaway in resort towns like Zeralda

Benin

The African country of Benin eliminated all COVID-19 restrictions on international travellers. 

Top things to do in Benin:

  • Explore the culture of voodoo arts at the Fetish Market in Cotonou
  • Visit Pendjari National Park for lions, elephants, and other wildlife
  • Seek out the stunning beaches of Cotonou and Ouidah

Botswana

Botswana has removed all travel restrictions but still implements mask-wearing in some public areas.

Top things to do in Botswana:

  • Hike up Tsodilo Hills to admire ancient rock art and drawings  
  • Ride through the Okavango Delta and observe the local wildlife
  • Catch zebras migrating in Nxai Pan National Park

Cape Verde

There are no travel requirements for those visiting Cape Verde, regardless of vaccination status.

Top things to do in Cape Verde:

  • Enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving from Santa Maria Beach on Sal
  • Find stunning beaches like Praia de Chaves
  • Hop on a horse and ride along the rugged coastline of Boa Vista
  • Soak up the vibrant vibes of Santa Maria

Congo 

As of 5 May 2022, Congo lifted all COVID-related entry requirements, including tests, vaccination, and quarantine.

Top things to do in Congo:

  • Meet orphaned mountain gorillas at the Senkwekwe Mountain Gorilla Centre
  • See the only glaciers in Africa in the Rwenzori Mountains
  • Lounge on beaches like Pointe Indienne
  • Enjoy wildlife encounters in Congo’s national parks

Egypt

Among the countries without travel restrictions is Egypt, where tourists can enter without showing proof of vaccination or negative tests. Quarantine is also not required. 

Top things to do in Egypt:

  • Pay a visit to the world-famous Pyramids of Giza
  • Take a cruise on the Nile River
  • Dive into the Red Sea for stunning marine life
  • Roam Cairo, including the renowned shopping souq Khan el-Khalili

Eswatini

As of 10 Nov 2022, the landlocked country Eswatini has relaxed their travel restrictions. Travellers no longer need proof of vaccination or testing prior to entry.

Top things to do in Eswatini:

  • Experience an African safari in the Hlane Royal National Park and Mbuluzi Game Reserve
  • Shop for traditional and hand-made souvenirs at the Swazi Market
  • Immerse in Swazi culture at the National Museum in Lobamba

Ethiopia

All entry requirements for travellers have been lifted by Ethiopia

Things to do in Ethiopia:

  • Spot rare creatures in the wild Bale Mountains and Simien Mountains National Parks, like the Ethiopian wolf, black-maned lion, and gelada baboon
  • Scale the remote Erta Ale volcano, home to two active lava lakes
  • Pay a visit to the magnificent Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

Gabon

Having scrapped entry requirements in March, Gabon led the pack as the first of the African countries to remove travel restrictions. However, travellers must remember to wear face masks in confined areas in Gabon.

Top things to do in Gabon:

  • Check out the markets and landmarks of the capital city, Libreville
  • Go on a safari in Lopé National Park for sightings of gorillas, elephants, and other animals
  • Enjoy beaches and water sports like water skiing and diving

Madagascar 

Tick Madagascar off your bucket list as it joins other countries with no travel restrictions for foreign tourists.

Top things to do in Madagascar:

  • Get your best chances of seeing lemurs at Ranomafana National Park or Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
  • Marvel at the otherworldly landscape of baobab trees at the Avenue of the Baobabs
  • Swim with whale sharks off Nosy Be
  • Explore the craggy stone forests of Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park

Mauritius

The African nation of Mauritius ended all entry requirements as of 1 Jul 2022. Face masks remain mandatory in public transportation, including on flights to Mauritius.

 Top things to do in Mauritius:

  • Lose yourself in spectacular nature with a hike at the Black River Gorges National Park
  • Play water sports endlessly around the tiny island, from scuba diving and snorkelling to water skiing and kitesurfing
  • Take a stroll through historic mansions like Eureka Mansion

Morocco

Regardless of vaccination status, travellers can enter Morocco for tourism purposes. There are currently no COVID-related entry requirements in place, although arriving tourists must fill out a health form.

  • Visit Aït Benhaddou, a small village that blends seamlessly into the mountains

Namibia

Namibia no longer requires proof of vaccine, testing, or entry form from travellers.

Reunion

Another French territory, Reunion makes the list of African countries without travel restrictions in place. The tiny island dropped all entry requirements as of 1 Aug 2022.

  • Hike the cirques’ spectacular peaks and valleys
  • Take a walk around towns like the capital St Denis

Rwanda

Testing or quarantine measures are no longer to be expected for international tourists visiting Rwanda. This goes for vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers alike. 

Top things to do in Rwanda:

  • Experience gorilla tracking in Volcano National Park
  • Enjoy encounters with elephants, hippos, and giraffes in Akagera National Park
  • Pay tribute to lives lost at the Genocide Memorial in Kigali
  • Walk along treetops on the canopy walkway in Nyungwe Forest National Park

South Africa

Travellers no longer have to submit COVID-related entry requirements to enter the country of South Africa.

Top things to do in South Africa:

  • Go on an African safari and get a glimpse of the Big 5 (elephants, lions, leopards, African buffalos, and rhinos)
  • Explore beautiful Cape Town and its beaches
  • Savour some vino in the Stellenbosch wine region
  • Risk cave diving with great white sharks

Senegal

There are no more vaccine or testing requirements for anyone travelling to Senegal.

Things to do in Senegal:

  • Appreciate stunning local art at Théodore Monod Museum of African Art
  • Explore historic monuments like Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves)
  • Escape to Île de N’Gor for peaceful beaches and incredible surf spots

Seychelles

As of 1 Dec 2022, Seychelles joined the growing list of African countries without travel restrictions. The country no longer requires travellers to present vaccine proof or a negative COVID-19 test. However, tourists must have valid travel insurance and complete an online travel declaration form.

Top things to do in Seychelles:

  • Sail to spellbinding beaches, like Anse Source d’Argent, Anse Lazio, and Anse Volbort
  • Hike the nature trails of Mahé Island
  • Visit the country’s Garden of Eden, Vallée de Mai

Tunisia

In North Africa, travellers can now visit Tunisia regardless of vaccination status.

Top things to do in Tunisia:

  • Travel back in time in the exceptionally preserved Medina of Tunis
  • Wander around the ancient ruins of Carthage, once an important port that rivalled the Romans
  • Relax on the Mediterranean coast in coastal towns like Nabeul and Hammamet
